Textiles printed on both sides with intricate woodblock designs, and dyed in indigo and crimson madder Process: Use of resist allows for multiple dyes, their colours fixed with mordants and deepened by repeated immersion and exposure to air Provenance: Created for nomadic pastoralists by Khatri community in Sindh, Pakistan; Kutch (Khavda, Dhamadka, recently Ajrakhpur) and Rajasthan (Barmer) History: Fragments found in C.11–14 Fostat (Egypt); practised by Khatris since C.16 Motifs: Mostly geometric, aligned with diagonals and medians of squares (moru, peacock; jileb, jalebi), or dispersed centrifugally along diagonals (dabuli, jewel box; ishq painch, love intrigue) Status: Local custom lost to cheaper substitutes (polyester, screen printing, synthetic dyes), but growth of urban and overseas market has enabled some families to continue and renew tradition.
